A Better First Conversation

Relationships · 3-page PDF · 15-25 minutes

A preparation guide for a young man, parent, guardian, or mentor.

What this workbook helps you do

Start by hearing how the young man describes his own situation. A first meeting is not improved by asking for every difficult detail at once. Explain the purpose, agree on what is appropriate to discuss, and choose one next step together. A program should explain its actual privacy and safety procedures rather than promising absolute secrecy.

A practice example

A parent wants better grades; a young man wants help managing a work schedule. The conversation identifies a shared problem: making time to finish schoolwork. They agree to map the week before arguing about motivation.

Start with these questions

  1. What does the young man want help with in his own words?
  2. What is already working, and who is supporting him?
